10. Norville Barnes, “Hadsaker's Assistant” | 1994
This comedy was released the same year as The Shawshank Redemption, but did not become a classic. The film tells the story of a man named Norville who, after graduation, moves to New York and takes a courier to Hadsaker's large company.
The owner of the company suddenly jumps out of the window and after his death one of the directors decides to bring down the shares in order to buy them for nothing and take over the business.
To implement his plan, he hires Norville, making him the leader in the hope that, due to inexperience, he will quickly lead to a depreciation. However, the guy is not so simple, and there is definitely a business vein in him.
9. Griffin Mill, The Player | 1992
A comedy drama was released in 1992 and here Robbins got the role of the head of a film studio named Griffin Mill, who is empowered to choose scripts for future films.
He has to refuse many people, so his enemies are above the roof, and one of them begins to intimidate him by sending threatening letters. In a fit of panic mixed with anger, he kills a man, after which he begins an affair with his widow.
Now he faces two tasks: to turn his back on punishment for the murder and to keep his chair in the company, which has shaken very much under him. The picture has collected many awards, and Robbins himself received the Golden Globe, the prize of the Cannes Film Festival, as well as nominations for BAFTA and Oscar.
8. Jacob Singer, “Jacob's Ladder” | 1990
“Jacob's Staircase” is a mystical thriller about war veteran Jacob Singer, who is tormented by visions of strange monsters. Associating this with post-traumatic stress, he nevertheless decides to find out the possible cause of hallucinations, combining with other veterans.
Now this film is considered a cult, but at the time of release went unnoticed, not having recouped the budget and received disapproval of critics. So that you understand the importance of the picture, we will cite just one fact: it was the “Jacob's Ladder” that served as the main source of inspiration for the creators of the Silent Hill series.
6. Walter Larson, “On the Edge” | 2015
The most recent role of Robbins in our selection. “On the Edge” - a series from HBO, aired in the summer of 2015. He talks about three different people: an official (played by Jack Black), a military pilot (Pablo Schreiber) and the US Secretary of State, whose role was played by Tim Robbins. These people have to solve many problems, establishing not only their own lives, but also trying to prevent the outbreak of the Third World War.
The first season received good reviews and gathered a decent audience, so the channel announced the continuation, which, for unknown reasons, was canceled. So, those who decide to watch “On the Edge” will have to be content with 10 episodes.
5. Bi, “Perfect Day” | 2015
The plot of the film tells about an international group of people who are faced with the task of pulling a corpse out of a well, poisoning the water in it. This is happening against the backdrop of the war in the Balkans, so such a seemingly simple task in practice turns out to be difficult.
Tim Robbins plays one of the team members named B, and his partners on the set were Benicio del Toro, Olga Kurylenko and Melanie Thierry. Despite the average quality of the film itself, the performance of del Toro and Robbins delighted even those who smashed the tape itself to pieces.
5. Oliver Lang, Road to Arlington | 1998
This is one of Robbins' most unusual roles, since here he plays a terrorist who carefully conceals his identity. He settles in a quiet area with his wife and son, and his neighbor is Michael Faraday, a history teacher whose wife was an FBI agent and died in the attack.
He, like his son, barely survived her death, and the hatred of the radicals settled inside makes Michael begin to suspect his new neighbor. The film is also notable for the fact that despite the presence of a clear villain, it does not cause hatred. Not least thanks to the charm of the actor who played it.
4. Nick Bim, “Nothing to lose” | 1997
In this film, Tim tried on the image of a comedian, and, despite the skepticism of some critics, the result was excellent. He plays a thriving insurance agent, Nick Beam, whose life collapses on the day he catches his wife during sex with his boss.
Crazy, he gets into the car and accidentally drives into the "black" area, where he is trying to rob the loser bandit Terence (Martin Lawrence). Nick locks himself in the car with the burglar and starts racing along the oncoming lane, terrifying the criminal. Gradually, they find a common language and a strange, but strong friendship is formed between them.
3. Dave Boyle, “The Mysterious River” | 2003
We simply could not ignore this character, because it was the image of Dave Boyle that brought Tim Robbins the only Oscar in his career for the best supporting actor. His film partner, Sean Penn, also received his figurine, but for the lead role.
The plot tells the story of three friends: Dave, Sean and Jimmy. When they were children, they were caught for hooliganism by a neighbor who called himself a policeman and took Dave allegedly to the station. In fact, he turned out to be a pedophile and for a long time raped the boy until he managed to escape. After 30 years, fate brings friends together again: Jimmy’s daughter is killed, Sean, who became a police officer, is investigating the case, and Dave becomes the main suspect.
2. Joseph, The Secret Life of Words | 2005
A stunning love story from the Spanish director Isabelle Coishet, in which Robbins played the injured worker on an oil platform, he temporarily lost his sight.
The girl Hannah, who escaped from her terrible past and people, takes care of him. Gradually, a relationship is built between the characters based on an understanding of each other's pains, motivating and inspiring the viewer.
1. Andy Dufrain, "Shawshank Redemption" | 1994
We finish the selection with a role that has already been mentioned more than once. Despite the excellent work in the “Player”, which brought a lot of awards, it was precisely after “Shawshank Redemption” that Tim woke up as a real star.
The role of the undeservedly convicted, Andy Dufrein, who has been preparing an escape and future life for free for many years, has become almost the standard of acting. Calm and quiet, but at the same time having a character of steel will - a real role model, if we talk about courage and determination.
